Postwar American Experimental Film and Queer Psychogeography  / Juan Antonio Suárez and Juan Francisco Belmonte-Ávila

American Studies in Scandinavia, 52 (2020) 1, p. 33-56
bron: American Studies in Scandinavia jaargang: 52 (2020) 1 , p. 33-56
samenvatting: This essay reads queer American experimental film of the 1940s and 1950s - by Kenneth Anger, Willard Maas, Gregory Markopoulos, and Curtis Har rington, among others - as a form of queer psychogeography: a style of urban dwelling and transit that originated with French surrealism in the late 1920s and was subsequently theorized by Lettrists and Situationists in the 1950s. Psychogeography consisted in drifting through the city in search of evocative or destabilizing spots, which, for postwar American experimental filmmakers, were locations latent with (queer) sexual possibility. This approach allows us to re-interpret these films from an unprecedented perspective. So far conceptualized as cinematic renderings of trances and dreams triggered by the search for sexual identity, the present article shows that this body of work registers as well a material practice consisting in the covert sexu alisation of urban space; this practice arises from the attempt of postwar queer sub cultures to escape regulation and surveillance during repressive times.

Queer Sovereignties: Cultural Practices of Sexual Citizenship in the Dutch Caribbean  / Wigbertson Julian Isenia.

bron:
samenvatting: This dissertation examines the reimagination of sexual citizenship by same-sex desiring and trans* subjects in the Dutch Caribbean through cultural practices, focusing primarily on Curaçao. Analysing archival documents, performances, novels, photographs, letters to the editors of newspapers, and erotic lexicons, I propose approaching these subjects' cultural practices through the theoretical lens of what I call 'queer sovereignties'. The concept of queer sovereignties refers to the positions staked out by same-sex desiring and trans* subjects as they reimagine how to achieve collective autonomy within the postcolonial context of the non-independent Caribbean, and emphasises how these positions both disrupt and conform to hegemonic notions of sexuality, gender, and nation.

Queer Turkey : Transnational Poetics of Desire  /

Ralph J. Poole.Bielefeld: Transcript, 2022 - 259 p.: ill.
uitgave: Bielefeld: Transcript, 2022 - 259 p.: ill.
onderwerpen:
samenvatting: Before Erdogan's repressive politics took hold, queer cultures were more visible than ever in Turkey. Queer Turkey offers a broad range of reflections on queer Turkish cultures within a transnational, Euro-American context. Based on his experience in Istanbul, Ralph J. Poole shares his impressions of queer desires between Muslim tradition and global pop, observes what goes on in the hamam, and wonders about Arabesk culture. The book features discussions of queer travel writers, poets, playwrights, and film directors. Their multifarious works manifest the subtle and subversive ways in which artists crisscross the cultural borders of East and West. With its many facets of Turkish-Euro-American cultural interactions, Queer Turkey outlines a kaleidoscope of transnational poetics.

Taking CuntRoll; a zinester testimony  / Raquel Silva.

Zines: An International Journal on Amateur and DIY Media (2021) 2, p. 100-106
bron: Zines: An International Journal on Amateur and DIY Media (2021) 2 , p. 100-106
samenvatting: This paper is about my own experience as a zine maker since 2011, when I first edited and published the first number of CuntRoll zine. The contrubtions for the first issue were created by my group of friends who were apiring artists, from illustration to writing or comics. I was surrounded by a group of female identified queer pwople who loved art and to create as much as I did. We needed to express ourselves in order to survive and the best part was having someone else to share our art with. As a recent student in a socioloy master, my focus is to research and write about queer culture in a small country such as Portugal, but more specifically in isolated regions, such as the islands of Azores and Madeira. This paper focusses on my personal perspective as a zine maker, lover and artivist over the last 9 years

samenvatting: 'Last Call Chicago: A History of 1001 LGBTQ-Friendly Taverns, Haunts & Hangouts' is a history of LGBTQ venues in Chicago going back in time as far as records of such venues exist. Both before and after Stonewall, LGBTQ bars and hangouts served the purpose of bringing the LGBTQ together and served as informal community centers. They were and are part of the vibrant fabric of the LGBTQ community. Opening Last Call Chicago is like stepping into a time machine that transports us across the years to bear witness to the triumphs, challenges, and sometimes heartaches of the LGBTQ community in Chicago.
